We spent last Friday through Monday in Houston visiting Nada's relatives from England. Syd and Andrea Morrisson were on their way to the Cancun area for a work-related vacation and stopped in Houston for a few days prior to sun-bathing. We are hoping to visit them in England this summer, and maybe fly to their vacation home in Cyprus if it all works out.
I did the obligatory Kirkwood ride Saturday morning. Mistake. It is always a fast ride, and the 20 mph winds and lingering sinus problems, combined with about 2 hours of sleep, meant a harder than normal ride for me. Plus, the fastest road racer in Texas at the moment, Kevin Kremke, made sure he kicked my teeth in the entire duration of the ride. No warm-up whatsoever. We rolled out of the parking lot, turned onto Eldridge Parkway, and WHAM, 30 mph and single file. I kept getting dropped the first 1/2 of the ride. But after getting a coke at the convenient store stop, I felt MUCH better. Amazing what a little sugar and caffeine will do for you.
Riding in Houston is interesting b/c you never seem to leave the city. Probably 50% of the ride consists of interval like drag-racing efforts between stop lights down suburban roads. Not the sort of roads you'd normally ride on by yourself, but in a group you simply take up a lane. Totally different from Austin where you generally have bike lanes in town, otherwise you are out on some small county road.
I also got to catch up with Brandon Cowart, and old riding buddy from my college days in Huntsville, TX.
The rest of Nada's family on her mom's side came to town for the weekend, as well. It was a Chapman family reunion, of sorts. Nada's mom made an Arabic feast of shish-ka-bob, hummus, and salad Friday night and followed it up with a huge, delicious curry dinner Saturday night.
